Solar powers time lapse cameras on construction sites

Burgess Technologies is addressing the growing market for monitoring and documenting construction sites where images captured by Ethernet enabled HD cameras can be viewed on a web portal, accessible from anywhere.

By partnering with Leading Edge Power, Burgess Technologies provides a “place anywhere” off-grid power system using high performance yet compact monocrystalline panels combined with deep cycle batteries to ensure there is enough “power in the tank” even on cloudy/rainy days.

Customers for these time lapse monitoring systems are often production or photography companies tasked by their clients to capture the progress of a large scale build as the above photographs show.

Leading Edge sized the off-grid power system taking the power loads of the camera and router into consideration. Power requirements are surprisingly low; the 4K 8.3MP Ultra HD (4096 × 2160 pixels) camera with a super wide angle varifocal lens and remote optical zoom draws just 13W and the Full HD 1080p (@ 1920 x 1080) version just 3.6W.

In a typical set up, the time lapse camera is mounted on the top of the pole with the PV panels mounted further down and there’s an enclosure at the foot of the pole. The enclosure houses the deep cycle battery bank and 3G/4G Cellular Router.

The solution provided by Burgess is pre-programmed and pre-configured, including integration to a 50GB or 150GB cloud server to store the images. Onsite, the system can be set up within the hour and once the camera is plugged in it will start capturing and archiving images. These can then be viewed and downloaded from a web portal, branded with the client’s name.
