Off-Grid Power Systems & Solutions
"An off-grid / remote power system can sometimes offer significant savings, as well as being good for the environment."
Off-grid power systems are complete remote electrical system solutions, which, in essence, provide a 'mini grid' to meet all the electricity needs of a dwelling or group of dwellings, such as a rural hamlet or village. Historically, complete off-grid power systems have been used primarily in countries where the national grid is unreliable, or not easily accessible outside of major conurbations. Outside of these areas, remote power systems were only really used in specific areas, such as alpine developments, or for isolated islands or certain scientific research stations.
However, in recent years, more and more people in developed countries have been turning to a completely off-grid power solution for both altruistic and economic reasons. With the cost of diesel at an all time high, generators are becoming very expensive to run (about 1 litre per kWh) and power companies charging exorbitant fees to connect remote buildings to the grid, a remote power system can sometimes offer significant savings, as well as being good for the environment. Incorporating both solar panels and a wind turbine into your off-grid power systems, means that batteries can also be charged overnight, whereas this is impossible with just solar.
