Hybrid Solar & Wind Power Systems
"Incorporating both solar panels and a wind turbine into your off-grid power systems, means that batteries can also be charged overnight, whereas this is impossible with just solar."
Hybrid solar and wind power systems are becoming more and more popular as technology becomes more affordable and efficient in powering equipment away from a mains power supply (known as off-grid). Here a battery-charging system is required with the wind and solar complimenting each other.
The main benefit of a hybrid solar-wind system is that, often, when there is a lot of wind there is little sunlight and vice versa. Wind turbines also have the benefit of being somewhat better at producing power at night! By installing a hybrid system of both solar and wind power, you are able to harness energy 24-hours a day, in most weather conditions and at most times of the year.
This approach has particularly successful in powering roadside signs, rural broadband and radio communications networks, telemetry equipment, as well as in the security and CCTV markets (see our case studies). In most of these cases, power drawn from the batteries is quite cyclic and seasonal, for example, a roadside speed sign will be activated more often during rush hours (at the beginning and end of the day), whereas a critical security system is often fitted with infrared floodlights for night use. Incorporating both solar panels and a wind turbine into your off-grid power systems, means that batteries can also be charged overnight, whereas this is impossible with just solar.
