Powering Elmley Off-Grid with Solar & Battery Innovation

About this project

Too much Diesel

Elmley Nature Reserve is a unique, fully off-grid farm set amidst breathtaking landscapes in North Kent. It operates as a wedding venue and offers luxury glamping, retreats, and immersive conservation/wildlife experiences.

Solar panels on Elmley building

While their ethos centres around conservation and harmony with nature, their old energy setup told a different story - an outdated, undersized solar array supplemented heavily by a diesel generator. In addition to being costly and environmentally out of step with Elmley’s values, the diesel generator’s noise undermined the peaceful atmosphere guests came to enjoy and created unnecessary CO₂ emissions.

Our mission was to replace dependency on diesel with a high-performing solar and battery solution, enabling Elmley to operate more sustainably, quietly, and efficiently.

Our Solution

Working in partnership, Leading Edge Power and Your Eco transformed Elmley’s energy system from the ground up:

  • Full System Redesign: improving efficiency and reliability, Leading Edge overhauled DC architecture executing a full system upgrade, including inverters

  • Solar Expansion: the modest 6kW old solar was elevated to a 40+kWh solar array, installed by Your Eco.

  • Battery & Controller Upgrade: Leading Edge installed a modern solar controller and a refreshed DC distribution system to maximise battery performance.

  • Energy Optimisation: Smart distribution strategies were implemented to prioritise solar and battery use, drastically reducing generator reliance and associated emissions.

Results

  • Generator-Free Summers: Elmley now runs entirely on solar and battery during summer months.

  • Minimal Winter Generator Use: Only short generator runs are needed in winter, cutting diesel use to a fraction.

  • Financial Savings: Significant annual diesel cost savings, freeing funds for reinvestment.

Environmental Impact:

  • Major CO₂ emissions reduction.

  • Quieter operations — enhancing guest experience and protecting wildlife.

  • Improved air quality and reduced pollution on site.

The Impact

Elmley’s transformation has been more than technical - it’s experiential. Guests now enjoy a truly silent, nature-immersive stay without the hum of a generator. Wildlife benefits from cleaner air and a quieter environment, aligning perfectly with Elmley’s conservation values. Fuel costs have been drastically reduced saving £10,000+ a year, and harmful emissions replaced with sustainable renewable energy.

Testimonial

This project proves that with the right expertise, off-grid operations don’t have to compromise on comfort, cost, or conscience. Elmley Nature Reserve’s upgraded off-grid system is a shining example of how sustainable energy can enhance both the environment and the guest experience, all while making solid financial sense.

The system has the option of being remotely monitored via a Web interface to check how the system is performing with the ability to receive alarm signals and change system settings, leading to a seamless operational capability.
